Kansas Industrial Retraining (KIR)

Kansas Department of CommerceNo deadline listed

Summary

Restructuring Kansas companies can get matched reimbursement (typically $1,200-$2,000 per trainee, at least 1:1 company match) to retrain existing employees at risk of displacement from new technology or production changes.

About this grant

KIR is a job retention tool that reimburses restructuring Kansas companies for retraining existing employees who are likely to be displaced because of obsolete or inadequate job skills. Eligible costs include instructor salaries, curriculum planning, materials, training aids, minor training equipment and travel. Commerce guidelines put the typical funding range at $1,200 to $2,000 per trainee and require at least a dollar-for-dollar company match. Applications are accepted year round with a non-refundable $500 application fee.

Who can apply

  • Small businesses
  • For-profit companies

A company must show how it is restructuring its current business operations, retrain at least one existing position at an average wage equal to or greater than the county median wage, and show how the employee will be displaced.

Restructuring must be due to incorporation of existing or new technology, diversification of production, or development and implementation of new production.

KIR projects require at least a dollar-for-dollar match from the company; indirect, in-kind expenses do not count toward the match.

Companies are eligible for no more than two KIR contracts within a four-year period.

Priority is given to Kansas Basic Industries; a non-manufacturing company must show at least 51% of revenue from outside Kansas.
