Questions about this grant

Who can apply for this grant?
For-profit US small businesses with 500 or fewer employees including affiliates, more than 50% owned and controlled by US citizens or permanent residents (some agencies also accept majority ownership by venture capital, hedge fund, or private equity firms; the solicitation says). The principal investigator must be primarily employed by the business for SBIR, or the business must partner with a US nonprofit research institution for STTR. You must be registered in SAM.gov before submitting.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not specifically address sole proprietors or single-member LLCs. The stated rule is a for-profit US business with 500 or fewer employees that is majority US-owned, so check the official solicitation to confirm your structure qualifies.
Can a nonprofit apply?
No. Only small for-profit businesses may apply. Under STTR, a nonprofit research institution or university can participate as a partner doing at least 30% of the work, but it cannot be the applicant.

Summary

SBIR Phase I/II contract topic for US small businesses (≤500 employees, majority US-owned). Funds R&D of a non-destructive, high-precision launch and flight-control system for long-rod projectiles to improve Air Force Live Fire Test & Evaluation data for penetrating munitions and aircraft survivability assessments.

About this grant

The lack of a non-destructive, high-precision launching method for high length-to-diameter (L/D) projectiles fundamentally degrades the fidelity of Live Fire Test and Evaluation (LFT&E) data. For the Air Force, this deficiency directly compromises the development of penetrating munitions, degrades the survivability assessments of aerospace platforms, and introduces significant acquisition risks due to flawed test data and increased testing costs. Currently, there is not means of reliably controlling or manipulating the flight of a long rod projectile such that it consistently reaches a target location at a specific orientation. Providing means of accomplishing this feat advances DoW test capabilities for critical data underpinning analytical vulnerability assessments and engineering designs improving the survivability posture of current and next generation combat aircraft.
