Shallow Jet Spurt Engineering Model

Department of War, Air ForceCloses Nov 25, 2026(28 days left)

Does this fit your business?

This is an Air Force SBIR/STTR contract topic for US for-profit small businesses with 500 or fewer employees to build a reduced-order engineering model predicting hydrodynamic spurt formation in shaped-charge jets. It is for defense-adjacent R&D firms with physics, simulation, or warhead-modeling capability; companies without that technical background, and any nonprofit, should not bother applying.

Best for
Small for-profit defense technology firms doing R&D, Businesses with expertise in hydrocodes, simulation, or munitions modeling, Small businesses partnering with a university under STTR
Not for
Nonprofits and social service organizations, Businesses outside defense, technology, or science R&D, Companies without modeling or simulation capability

Questions about this grant

Who can apply for this grant?
For-profit US small businesses with 500 or fewer employees including affiliates, more than 50% owned and controlled by US citizens or permanent residents. This is a contract, not a grant, awarded through the SBIR Phase I-II process. You must be registered in SAM.gov before submitting.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts state only that applicants must be for-profit US small businesses with 500 or fewer employees and majority US ownership. They do not specifically address sole proprietors or single-member LLCs, so check the official solicitation.
Can a nonprofit apply?
No. Only for-profit small businesses may apply. Under the STTR track, a small business can partner with a US nonprofit research institution or university, which must do at least 30% of the work, but the nonprofit cannot be the applicant.

Summary

SBIR/STTR Phase I-II contract topic for US small businesses (≤500 employees, majority US-owned) to develop a computationally efficient reduced-order engineering model predicting hydrodynamic spurt formation in shaped-charge jets, enabling faster warhead design iteration for the Air Force.

About this grant

This topic seeks the development of a computationally efficient engineering-level model to predict the formation and characteristics of the "spurt" in fluid cavity created jets. The hydrodynamic spurt is the initial, often unsteady, ejection of material from the liner, preceding the formation of the main, stable jet. Current hydrocodes can model this phenomenon but are computationally expensive and ill-suited for rapid design iteration. This project will develop a validated, reduced-order model that accurately predicts spurt velocity, mass, and geometry as a function of liner material, geometry, and threat characteristics, enabling faster design and optimization of advanced warheads.

Who can apply

Small businesses only: a for-profit US business with 500 or fewer employees, including affiliates.

More than 50% owned and controlled by US citizens or permanent residents (some agencies also accept majority ownership by venture capital, hedge fund or private equity firms; the solicitation says).

SBIR: the principal investigator is primarily employed by the business. STTR: the business partners with a US nonprofit research institution or university, which does at least 30% of the work.
