National Institutes of HealthCloses Nov 30, 2028(779 days left)

Does this fit your business?

This is not a grant for new applicants — it is an administrative supplement for organizations that already hold an active NIH research grant and need extra funds for unforeseen costs within the approved project scope. If you do not currently have a qualifying NIH award, do not bother applying. Healthcare and biotech organizations with existing NIH funding are the strongest fit.

Best for
Current NIH grantees with an active research award facing unforeseen costs within the approved project scope, NIH-supported research institutions and labs, Small businesses holding an existing qualifying NIH research grant
Not for
Businesses with no existing NIH grant, Organizations seeking funding for new projects outside an approved NIH award scope

Questions about this grant

When is the application deadline?
The application deadline is 2028-11-30.
Who can apply for this grant?
Only current recipients of specific types of NIH research grants can apply — the parent award must be active, and the supplement must cover unforeseen increased costs within the peer-reviewed scope of that approved project. Eligible organizations include small businesses, for-profits, nonprofits, universities, and state, local, and tribal governments, but only if they hold an existing qualifying NIH award.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not specifically address sole proprietors or single-member LLCs. Small businesses and for-profit organizations are listed as eligible, but only if they hold an existing active NIH research grant to supplement.
Can a nonprofit apply?
Yes. Nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status are listed as eligible, but only if they are current recipients of an active NIH research grant that qualifies for an administrative supplement.

Summary

Current NIH grantees may request administrative supplements to an active NIH research grant to cover unforeseen, increased costs within the approved project's peer-reviewed scope. Eligible applicants include small businesses, for-profits, nonprofits, universities, and state, local, and tribal governments, but only holders of an existing qualifying NIH award can apply.

About this grant

Current recipients of specific types of NIH research grants may apply for administrative supplements, using this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), to provide additional funding to a currently funded grant to meet increased costs that are within the scope of the peer-reviewed and approved project, but that were unforeseen when the new or competing renewal application was awarded. Applications for administrative supplements are considered prior approval requests (as described in Section 8.1.2.11 of the NIH Grants Policy Statement) and will be routed directly to the Grants Management Officer of the parent award. There is no guarantee that funds are available from the awarding IC or for any specific grant. Therefore, prior to submission, applicants must discuss potential requests with the awarding ICO grants and program officials.

Who can apply

Other Eligible Applicants: Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; U.S. Territory or Possession; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Regional Organizations; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations). Reminder: This NOFO supports administrative supplements to existing projects. To be eligible, the parent award must be active (i.e., not in a co-cost extension), and the research proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the competitive segment. The proposed supplement must be to provide for an increase in costs due to unforeseen circumstances. All additional costs must be within the scope of the peer reviewed and approved project. IMPORTANT: The research proposed in the supplement application must be within the peer-reviewed scope of the NIH-supported grant project. Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations: All activities with foreign institutions must align with existing parent award. NIH will no longer issue awards (new, renewal, or non-competing continuation) to domestic or foreign entities that involve foreign subawards/subcontracts. All NIH-funded research involving foreign subawards/subcontracts must be submitted in response to a NOFO that is specifically designated for funded international collaborations. This new requirement was effective, May 1, 2025. Applications involving foreign subawards/subcontracts submitted in response to this NOFO will be deemed noncompliant and will not be considered for funding. This policy applies to all monetary international collaborations resulting in foreign subawards/subcontracts, however, it does not preclude unfunded international collaborations or foreign components, funding for foreign consultants, or procurement of unique equipment or supplies from foreign vendors.
