Does this fit your business?

This is an NSF basic-research program, not a business grant: it funds theoretically motivated, methodologically rigorous scientific research on global and national security, plus undergraduate research experiences and research infrastructure. It explicitly does not fund applied research, so companies looking for money to develop or commercialize a product should not bother. Eligibility is unrestricted, but the work must be basic science.

Best for
Research organizations studying security-related questions, Universities and colleges running undergraduate research experiences, Small businesses doing basic scientific research, Teams building methodological infrastructure
Not for
Businesses needing applied research funding, Companies looking for working capital or product development money, Organizations outside security-related basic research

About this grant

The Security and Preparedness (SAP) Program supports basic scientific research that advances knowledge and understanding of issues broadly related to global and national security. Research proposals are evaluated on the criteria of intellectual merit and broader impacts; the proposed projects are expected to be theoretically motivated, conceptually precise, methodologically rigorous, and empirically oriented. Moreover, the Program supports research experiences for undergraduate students and infrastructural activities, including methodological innovations. The Program does not fund applied research. In addition, we encourage you to examine the websites for the National Science Foundation's Accountable Institutions and Behavior (AIB), Law and Science (LS) programs, and Research Infrastructure in the Social and Behavioral Sciences (RISBS) programs.
