Producers farming crop land inside Minnesota's Level 2 Drinking Water Supply Management Areas can earn up to $5,000 a year for up to three years for nitrogen-reducing practices such as cover crops. Reviewed on an ongoing basis.
This is a competitive pilot for producers who adopt farming practices that may reduce nitrate-nitrogen leaching into groundwater, on crop land in Level 2 Drinking Water Supply Management Areas. Funding is limited to $5,000 per year per producer for up to three years, with flat-rate payments per practice (for example, $40 per acre up to 125 acres for cover crops). Payments go to the producer after MDA verifies the practice, and registrations are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
