Apprenticeship Expansion Incentive

Alabama Office of Apprenticeship (Alabama Department of Workforce)No deadline listed

Summary

Alabama employers that create or expand registered apprenticeship programs can receive 50% wage reimbursement for an apprentice's first 480 on-the-job hours (up to 10 apprentices per occupation) and up to $10,000 one-time funding for in-house technical instruction costs, while funds last.

About this grant

The Alabama Office of Apprenticeship offers expansion incentives to employers with new and expanding registered apprenticeship programs; they replaced the Alabama Apprenticeship Tax Credit, which sunset at the end of 2024. According to the program's policy document, on-the-job learning contracts reimburse 50% of wages for 480 hours per apprentice, for up to 10 apprentices per employer per qualifying occupation. In-house related technical instruction contracts provide one-time setup funding of up to $10,000. Incentives are available only as long as funds last, and not all types are available at all times.

Who can apply

  • Small businesses
  • For-profit companies

A new program, or a new occupation added to an existing program, must be registered with the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship (AOA) after October 1, 2022, or the employer must be added to a group program after that date

A program or occupation may be considered 'new' for a total of three fiscal years, including the year it is registered

No program is automatically eligible; eligibility depends on the availability and prioritization of funds

OJL: maximum of 10 apprentices per employer per qualifying occupation; each apprentice can be claimed once, during the first year of registration; maximum allowable wage is 1.5x the AOA living wage

Reimbursement requires the apprentice to have been employed and paid for 480 hours; no partial reimbursement

Employers must submit a follow-up report to the AOA 12 months after payment
