Department of War, Air ForceCloses Nov 25, 2026(28 days left)

Does this fit your business?

This is an Air Force SBIR contract (not a grant) for US for-profit small businesses with 500 or fewer employees to develop compact 2-micron thulium-doped fiber amplifiers for directed energy, sensing, and materials processing. It is for laser/photonics R&D firms positioned to move toward production and Air Force program transition. Nonprofits and businesses outside fiber laser development should not bother applying.

Best for
Small for-profit photonics or laser technology firms, Businesses developing fiber amplifiers or directed energy components, Small businesses with R&D capability in defense laser technology, Firms able to partner with a nonprofit research institution (STTR)
Not for
Nonprofit organizations, Businesses with more than 500 employees, Companies with no fiber laser or photonics R&D work

Questions about this grant

Who can apply for this grant?
For-profit US small businesses with 500 or fewer employees, including affiliates, that are more than 50% owned and controlled by US citizens or permanent residents. The business must be registered in SAM.gov before submitting, and for SBIR the principal investigator must be primarily employed by the business.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not specifically address sole proprietors or single-member LLCs. The eligibility text requires a for-profit US business with 500 or fewer employees that is majority owned by US citizens or permanent residents; check the official solicitation for how your structure is treated.
Can a nonprofit apply?
No. Only for-profit small businesses may apply. Under STTR, a nonprofit research institution or university can be a partner doing at least 30% of the work, but the applicant is the small business.

Summary

SBIR Phase I/II contract for US small businesses (≤500 employees) to develop compact, low size-weight-and-power 2-micron thulium-doped fiber amplifiers for directed energy, sensing, and materials processing, leveraging Air Force lab architectures toward production and program transition.

About this grant

High-power fiber lasers operating in the 2-micron regime offer critical advantages for defense, medical, and industrial applications, including eye-safer directed energy, advanced sensing, and precision materials processing. While kilowatt-class, narrow-linewidth thulium-doped fiber amplifiers have been demonstrated, the Department of the Air Force aims to reduce the size and weight of existing kilowatt-class 2-micron fiber amplifiers into a highly compact system with similar size, weight, and power metrics of existing 1-micron fiber amplifiers. This topic seeks to leverage existing Air Force laboratory architectures to prime industry for production of robust 2-micron fiber amplifiers, paving the way for transition into active directed energy programs.
