Early Stage Testing of Pharmacologic or Neuromodulatory Device-based Interventions for the Treatment of Mental Disorders (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required)

National Institutes of HealthCloses Oct 15, 2027(367 days left)

Does this fit your business?

This is an NIH/NIMH clinical trial grant (R61/R33) for early-stage testing of drugs or neuromodulatory devices that treat mental disorders, and it requires an experimental therapeutics design that tests the intervention's mechanism of action. It fits clinical research teams — universities, nonprofits, small businesses, and for-profits running early-phase trials. If you are not running clinical research on mental health interventions, do not bother.

Best for
Small businesses and for-profits developing pharmacologic or neuromodulatory device-based interventions for mental, Universities and academic medical centers running clinical trials, Nonprofits (501(c)(3) and others) doing mental health clinical research, Tribal governments and organizations
Not for
Businesses outside clinical research (construction, retail, transportation, general software), Organizations without clinical trial capability or a mechanism-of-action research design

Questions about this grant

When is the application deadline?
October 15, 2027.
Who can apply for this grant?
Universities, nonprofits (with and without 501(c)(3) status), small businesses, other for-profits, state/local/county governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public housing authorities, and federally recognized tribal governments and tribal organizations. Foreign (non-U.S.) entities are also eligible, along with certain serving institutions such as HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not say. Small businesses are eligible, but the notice does not specify whether sole proprietors or single-member LLCs qualify, so check the full NOFO (PAR-25-184) on Grants.gov before assuming you can apply.
Can a nonprofit apply?
Yes. Both nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status and nonprofits without it (other than institutions of higher education) are listed as eligible applicants.

Summary

NIH/NIMH R61/R33 clinical trial grant supporting early-stage testing of pharmacologic or neuromodulatory device-based interventions for mental disorders, using experimental therapeutics designs that test mechanism of action. Eligible applicants include universities, nonprofits, small businesses, for-profits, state/local/tribal governments, and foreign entities.

About this grant

NIMH requires an experimental therapeutics approach for the development and testing of therapeutic interventions, in which studies both evaluate the clinical effect of an intervention and generate information about the mechanisms underlying a disorder or an intervention response. As part of NIMHs Clinical Trial Pipeline, this NOFO encourages early stage testing of pharmacologic interventions with novel mechanisms of actions or device-based interventions. More specifically, this NOFO is intended to support early stage testing of pharmacologic or device-based interventions using a protocol design where the presumed mechanism of action of the intervention is adequately tested, to provide meaningful information where target modulation yields a dose-dependent neurophysiological/clinical/behavioral effect.

Who can apply

Other Eligible Applicants include the following:

Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
