Does this fit your business?

This is an NIH R21 exploratory research grant for teams that can run invasive neural recording and stimulation studies in humans—meaning patients who already have electrodes implanted in the brain—to study the neural circuitry behind mental health disorders. It is for research only: dev</think>{

Best for
Universities and academic medical centers running invasive neural recording studies in humans, Small biotech or neurotech businesses with access to human invasive recording data or patients with implanted electrodes, Nonprofits and research institutes studying the neural basis of mood, emotion, cognition, or behavior, Hospitals, health systems, and government or tribal entities partnered on mental health neuroscience research
Not for
Companies or labs whose main goal is developing a new device, product, or therapy (explicitly out of scope), Researchers without access to human invasive recording or stimulation (e.g., those doing only non-invasive, animal, or纯, Retail, construction, transportation, and other industries with no neuroscience research capability

Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not say. Eligibility is listed by organization categories (universities, small businesses, for-profits, nonprofits, governments, tribal entities), and a sole proprietor or single-member LLC is not explicitly named, so check the full NOFO (PAR-25-291) on Grants.gov before assuming you qualify.
Can a nonprofit apply?
Yes. Both nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status and nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status (other than institutions of higher education) are listed as eligible applicants.

Summary

NIH R21 grants (up to $200,000) for invasive neural recording and stimulation studies in humans to advance understanding of neural circuitry underlying mental health disorders. Open to universities, small businesses, for-profits, nonprofits, governments, and tribal entities; clinical trials optional. New technology or therapy development is out of scope.

About this grant

Reissue of RFA-20-351.The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to encourage applications to pursue invasive neural recording studies focused on mental health-relevant questions. Invasive neural recordings provide an unparalleled window into the human brain to explore the neural circuitry and neural dynamics underlying complex moods, emotions, cognitive functions, and behaviors with high spatial and temporal resolution. Additionally, the ability to stimulate, via the same electrodes, allows for direct causal tests by modulating network dynamics. This funding opportunity aims to target a gap in the scientific knowledge of neural circuit function related to mental health disorders. Researchers should target specific questions suited to invasive recording modalities that have high translational potential. Development of new technologies and therapies are outside the scope of this NOFO.

Who can apply

Other Eligible Applicants include the following:

Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
