Does this fit your business?

This is a federal basic-research program for U.S. universities, not for businesses: only degree-granting institutions of higher education with science or engineering programs may apply, and for-profit companies and small businesses are explicitly barred from receiving funds. If you run a business, nonprofit, or lab, do not apply — you can at most collaborate on research without receiving money. It suits multidisciplinary university faculty teams pursuing defense-relevant basic research.

Best for
U.S. degree-granting universities with science or engineering programs, University research teams spanning multiple scientific disciplines, University Affiliated Research Centers that are not FFRDCs
Not for
For-profit businesses of any size, including small businesses, Nonprofit organizations, Foreign entities, FFRDCs, and DoW labs (they may collaborate but cannot receive funds)

About this grant

Established in 1985, the Department of War Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program funds U.S. academic research teams to conduct high-impact basic research that addresses future challenges faced by the Department of War. The MURI program specifically supports U.S. university teams investigating complex, DoW-relevant problem sets at the intersection of multiple scientific disciplines. MURI teams bring together world-class faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students—helping to develop a technically advanced, defense-aware scientific workforce and strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base.
